Letter from Ms. Moyer

Dear Hazelwood Families,

My name is Ms. Moyer and I am excited to join the Hazelwood community as the new general music teacher! I recently graduated from the University of Washington with a masters in Music Education, where my foci included community music, choral music, world music, and musical play. Having spent the last three years teaching for an early childhood music development program (Music Together), I am a firm believer in the power of play to stimulate musical growth. My goal for this year is to share with your students a wide range of musical cultures, help them develop the musical language of their own cultures, and guide them in creating and expressing ideas through music. Here is a summary of some of the musical happenings this year; specific performance dates to come!:

If your child is in the 4th-6th grade and interested in joining choir this year, please fill out the choir registration form and return it to the music room. We will be meeting every Thursday from 12:50-1:15pm in the music room, starting September 15th. We will be learning and performing music from a variety of vocal styles and genres, practicing healthy vocal technique, solo and part singing, and enjoying being in a community of friends who love to sing!

Starting in 5th grade, students have the opportunity to join either Orchestra or Band. During the first month of school students are trying all instruments available to them. Orchestra instruments include violin, viola, and cello. Band instruments include flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone. Students are encouraged to continue playing their chosen instrument throughout elementary school and onto middle school.

Brad Allison will be teaching band on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and Genevieve Schooler will be teaching orchestra during the same time.

5th - 6th

In additions to ensemble participation, 5th and 6th graders will have the opportunity to write their own songs, improvise, learn about classical and contemporary music styles, and develop their music reading skills. I am also excited to share that we will include a guitar unit this year, in which students will learn basic chords, strumming and picking patterns, and tablature reading.

It’s recorder time! I plan to start the 4th graders on recorder by the beginning of October. Information regarding purchasing a recorder and song book will be sent home with your student soon. If you are interested in purchasing a recorder and song book, please fill out the order form, attach the payment, and return it to your student’s homeroom teacher or directly to the music room.

To go along with the 3rd grade theme of world cultures, the 3rd graders will be listening to, singing, and playing songs from all over the world, and there will be a culminating musical entitled “Dr. Where.” (Dr. Who fans, anyone?)

Primary music education is all about exploration. Students are finding their singing voices, experimenting with different timbres (pitched/unpitched percussion), moving rhythmically through time and space, and developing a love for making music.

A Note to Parents/Guardians: One of my hopes for this year is to connect what the students are doing in the classroom with what is happening in their communities. If you or someone in your family is part of a musical group or community, and you would be interested in sharing your talents with the students at Hazelwood, please let me know. Musical guests in class are so exciting for budding musicians!

Thank you for all the support you give to the music program here at Hazelwood! Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
